About CSIL

How Choice in Supports for Independent Living works and who manages the services.

What is CSIL?

Choice in Supports for Independent Living (CSIL) is a self-directed option for eligible home support clients. Instead of receiving home support through a provider arranged by the health authority, the CSIL employer receives funding directly and uses it to purchase authorized home support services.

CSIL gives clients greater control over their support. The client can choose care providers, schedule services and oversee how approved CSIL funds are used.

Important: CSIL is not simply a cash benefit. Funding is tied to an assessed care plan, a CSIL agreement and approved expenditures. The CSIL employer has significant employer and administrative responsibilities.

Who can be the CSIL employer?

The client

An eligible client may manage and administer their own CSIL services.

CSIL representative

A person designated through a valid Representation Agreement may act as the CSIL employer for the client.

Client support group

An eligible incorporated non-profit society made up of family and/or friends may manage services for a client.
